What is the Kecak Dance?
The Kecak Dance is a signature Balinese dance-drama that generally portrays the epic tale of the Ramayana. The dance is performed by dozens of male dancers sitting in a concentric circle.
They chant “cak cak cak” while raising both arms. In one segment, they recreate the scene where an army of monkeys assists Rama in his battle against Rahwana, who has abducted Goddess Sita.
This “cak cak cak” chant serves as the sole musical accompaniment for the dance. Intermittently, you can also hear the jingling sound of bells tied to the ankles of the dancers portraying the main characters of the Ramayana epic.
History of the Kecak Dance
According to the official website of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Kecak Dance was co-created by two figures: a Balinese dancer named Wayan Limbak and a German painter, Walter Spies. Inspired by the traditional Sanghyang ritual, the Kecak Dance was first developed in the 1930s.
Following its creation, Wayan Limbak popularized the dance worldwide while touring with his troupe of Balinese dancers. Today, the Kecak Dance has become a globally recognized art form enjoyed by audiences from all walks of life.

The Kecak Dance is performed by dozens of dancers forming a circular formation. Throughout the performance, they depict the epic journey of Prince Rama rescuing his wife, Goddess Sita.

- Simple Attire: The dancers wear minimalist attire, consisting of a traditional checkered cloth wrapped as shorts and a headpiece. Kecak dancers perform bare-chested.
- Symbolic Gestures: The movement of hands raised above the head symbolizes flickering tongues of fire.
- Vocal Accompaniment: The dance is accompanied entirely by the natural sounds produced by the dancers’ mouths—the sharp, powerful, and repetitive chant of “cak cak cak.”
